Chapter Sixteen
Alexandra
My first day at McLaughton & Co. was awful. To start off with I was late, unforgivable on oneâs first day; secondly, I felt dreadful, with what I supposed was my first hangover; and thirdly, according to Madelaine all Michael had said about me the previous evening was, âWhat a ridiculous dressâ.
I wasnât sure that I liked working. It was awfully dull just sitting at a desk typing. Perhaps I should have let Daddy help me to get an interesting job. I couldnât wait for five oâclock when I could rush home and have a proper chat with Maddy.
Fortunately five oâclock finally came and I took a taxi home. Maddy was lolling about reading magazines; the lucky thing didnât start her job until next week.
âWhat was it like?â she asked. âHave you got a super boss who looks at your legs when you take dictation?â
âNo, Iâve got a grumpy old man who doesnât even know what legs are!â
We both laughed. âWhatâs for dinner?â We had planned to take it in turns to organise meals, and today was Maddyâs turn. It was fun actually, as we could try out all the recipes we had learnt at school.
âRoast beef and Yorkshire pud, and to start, puréed avocado pear, and to finish, crème caramel, and weâve overspent on our budget and Michael and Jonathan are coming to dinner. I thought youâd be pleased.â
âOh, great! How did you fix that?â
âEasy. I just asked them. My brotherâs not one to turn down a free meal.â
I was delighted. âWhat can I wear?â I wailed. Clothes in London were a great problem. I had to go shopping.
âSlacks and a tight sweater. Let him see your bosom, maybe that will attract him.â
I suppose my bosom was one of my best features.
I didnât have any tight sweaters so I borrowed one of Maddyâs. It did look good.
âWow!â Maddy said. âAre you wearing a bra?â
âOf course.â
âTake it off. Men find it more exciting if youâre not.â
âI canât do that.â
âYou want to get him in your evil clutches, donât you?â
I went back in the bedroom, took off my bra, and slipped the sweater back on. You could tell I wasnât wearing one; they bobbed a little when I walked.
Maddy prepared a really gorgeous dinner. Michael and Jonathan devoured every mouthful of the food, then watched TV.
Michael said, âHow was the party last night?â
âIt was very nice, but I got sââ
Before I could finish Maddy blurted out, âSheâs got a date with Steve Scott. Heâs mad about her.â
I blushed. How could she tell such awful lies?
âYou really are seeing London,â Michael said grimly. âMoving with the in crowd already. I bet your mother wonât be too pleased with the company youâre keeping.â
He was insufferable! They watched a bit more television and then left. I decided I hated him.
Madelaine giggled as soon as they were gone. âItâs working,â she said. âI think heâs jealous.â
âHeâs not, heâs so sarcastic to me.â
âThatâs good. At least heâs aware of you now; youâre not a little kid heâs known for ages any more.
